A variety of well-maintained trail systems throughout Maine’s Kennebec Valley offer prime opportunities for bikers looking for the challenge of single-track. Here are a few of our top picks for spots to ride, whether you are a family looking for fun or a thrill seeker looking for a brand new challenge.

the kennebec highlands
This area in Vienna, Rome, and Mount Vernon is known for its challenging single-track and repurposed double-track trails, offering a variety of riding experiences.
“A” Trail: 3.3 miles to lookout (900 ft. elevation gain); 4.5 miles to summit of McGaffey Mountain (1,200 ft. elevation gain)
This trail combines narrow single-track sections with wider sections of repurposed logging roads. At 3.2 miles, the trail splits into a loop that can be ridden in either direction and reaches the summit of McGaffey Mountain, with ledges, wild blueberries, and fantastic views.
“B” Trail: 1.3-mile loop (120 ft. elevation gain)
This beginner-friendly mountain bike trail leaves from Watson Pond Road. It flows through a hardwood forest, a meadow, and the site of a historical homestead.
Long Pond Trail: 0.5 miles one-way (120 ft. elevation gain)
This trail is designed for mountain bikes, featuring smooth bench cuts descending the hill, with puncheons and technical rocky sections closer to the lake. The trail ends at Long Pond, where visitors can enjoy a scenic picnic area and view of the lake.

The Kennebec Valley Trail starts in Bingham with a trailhead south of town on Goodrich Road. The riverbank is forested for the next 6.5 miles just north of Solon, where the trail veers right and crosses the river on an old railroad bridge across rocky Caratunk Falls.
After a 1.1-mile jaunt on Levee Road along a tamed section of river, you’ll pick up the Kennebec Valley Trail again as it enters a more agricultural district. Traveling along the high ground, you’ll catch occasional glimpses of the river in the valley below. After passing through Embden in 2.1 miles, the trail gets rougher in places over the next 4.5 miles until arriving in North Anson.

The Forks Area Scenic Trail
Along the Kennebec River, the Forks Area Scenic Trail is ideal for biking or hiking with dogs and kids. The trail begins one mile south of the Kennebec River Campground and ends 6 miles north in The Forks, where the rivers meet. Mountain bikers can continue on the trail to Maine’s highest waterfall, Moxie Falls. After your hike, enjoy a beer and a burger at Northern Outdoors’ Kennebec River Brewery

Located just a few miles from downtown Waterville, Quarry Road’s trails and open spaces provide outstanding opportunities for outdoor recreation with an extensive network of single-track and double-track trails.

Kennebec River Rail Trail
The Kennebec River Rail Trail is a popular mountain biking option spanning Gardiner along the river to Augusta, offering a variety of terrain. The Kennebec River Rail Trail is one segment of the East Coast Greenway, a trail being developed along the East Coast from the Florida Keys to Canada. Stop in quaint riverside towns to eat, shop, or enjoy the river views.

Bond Brook
Bond Brook’s trails are a popular spot for mountain biking. The park covers 270-acres of urban wilderness area within the City of Augusta.
Rotary Centennial Trail
This shorter trail system located in the small town of Benton is excellent for a quick ride just outside Waterville.
Lake George Regional Park
The Modine MTB Trail is a short but challenging single-track ride near the park’s south entrance in Canaan.
