Explore Adventure atop an atv
Maine’s Kennebec Valley is known for its trail riding along a vast, well-mapped trail system (ITS) for motorized use. It is perfect for those looking to rev up their vacation adventure atop an ATV or UTV.
ATV Clubs throughout the region offer maps and resources often found online or in local stores near trailheads. This broad community of clubs and their members will make you feel welcome on the trail.

get started
ATV riding can be enjoyed by the entire family. Many of the region’s outdoor adventure resorts and campgrounds cater to ATVers with direct access to the vast ITS. Ask your host if you need to rent an ATV, want a lesson, or are looking for a guide to lead your group’s adventure; they will gladly help.
On your ride, you will want to hit the top sights to take in that perfect lookout spot and enjoy a trailside lunch. End the day with a sunset lakeside ride. We’re confident everyone in your group will want to do it again the next day.
Know the Lingo
An ATV (all-terrain Vehicle), also known as a four-wheeler or quad, is a motorized off-road vehicle with a straddle-style seat and handlebars for steering. ATVs typically have four wheels and are designed for navigating various terrains.
UTVs are Utility-Terrain Vehicles, often called side-by-side vehicles or SxS. They typically have side-by-side seating for two or more people, a steering wheel instead of handlebars, and a roll cage for safety. UTVs are off-road vehicles designed for utility and recreational purposes.
Take care of the trails
Because nearly all the land you will be traveling on or across is privately owned, it is essential to be respectful and follow the rules. Stay on the marked trail, wear a helmet, ride on the right, and ALWAYS keep to the posted speed on the trail. Finally, always tread lightly and care for the land and nature while riding.
Know before you ride
If you decide to trail ride while visiting Maine’s Kennebec Valley, there are a few rules and regulations to know. Every all-terrain vehicle must be registered in Maine, even if owned by a nonresident.
