Maine Guides

For every Trip, there is a Guide to match

You will get more out of your hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation experiences when you work with a Registered Maine Guide. Maine has the best-tested guides and outfitters around. These outdoor professionals are licensed and permitted to accept any form of remuneration for their services in accompanying or assisting any person in the fields, forests or on the waters or ice within the jurisdiction of the State while hunting, fishing, trapping, boating, snowmobiling, using and all-terrain vehicle or camping at a primitive camping area.

A Brief History of Maine Guides

Licensing for Registered Maine Guides first began 1897. During that first year, 1,700 individuals became licensed, primarily in the hunting and fishing disciplines. Over the years, canoe trips gained popularity as well. There are currently approximately 6,300 licensed guides in Maine.

The history of guiding runs deep in Maine’s Heritage Sporting industry. It began when Cornelia “Fly Rod” Crosby—a woman— was issued the first Maine guide’s license in 1897. That continues today, with Guides working hard every day to provide outstanding outdoor experiences.

Many also offer equipment, advice, and instruction. So whether you’re hiking, kayaking, fishing, hunting, rafting, or even bird watching, there is a Maine guide whose specialty will match your interest.

Registered Guide Classifications

Maine Guides can be licensed in one or more specialized classifications, meaning they are qualified to guide one or more specific types of activities. Of Maine’s five categories, three are relevant to adventures available in Maine’s Kennebec Valley.

the kennebec River

The river slows as it moves south and widens out, making it an ideal place to paddle. Skip packing a lunch and grab something tasty along the way in Augusta, Hallowell, or Gardiner. It is easy to tie up and walk into town.

While on the river, pass by Old Fort Western as Benedict Arnold did, spot numerous bald eagles and their nests, or watch for massive prehistoric sturgeon as they breach the river’s surface.

Fishing

Maine Guides with this classification can guide fishing activities, including overnight camping trips in conjunction with those fishing activities on inland waters.

These professionals know where the fish are hiding out, and they deliver a memorable experience every time.

Hunting

Maine Guides with this classification can guide hunting and trapping activities, including overnight camping trips in conjunction with those activities.

The region offers many hunting opportunities and working with someone who knows the terrain and what licenses you need can greatly improve your success.
